アシュタンガ・ヴィンヤサヨガの創始者であるパタビジョイス氏（以下グルジ）が、孫のシャラス氏、娘のサラスワティ女史ら家族らに見守られて、なくられれたそうです。

Guruji passed away today at 2:30pm (Indian Standard Time). Thank you for all your condolences and prayers. Please kindly refrain from contacting the family directly at this time.
グルジの存在なければ、現在我々が練習しているような数々のアサナは存在してないかも。グルジがヨガ界に与えた影響は計り知れません。
心から哀悼の意を表します。

グルジは、家族に見守られて最後なくなられたそうです。孫のシャラス先生はグルジの容態が悪くなったためワールドツアーをキャンセルしていました。
グルジの生徒であるShannon Gannon先生とDavid Life先生のJivamukutiの本に、グルジとそのファミリーについて書いてあるところがあります。
UTLの向井田みお先生の「ヨガ哲学の旅 in India」にでてくるようにインドで広く支持されているヴェーダにはAshrama(アシュラマ)という人生を4段階にわける考えがあります。
ブランマチャリア＝学生の時期が終わると、社会にでる時代グラハスタ。そしてちょっと引退の時代、森で生活を意味するヴァーナプラスタ。最後に完全に社会から身を引く時代サンニャーサが、4段階の生き方です。
ヴェーダの考えに沿えば、グルジももうサンニャーサの段階だったわけですよね（＊）。つまりヒマラヤの洞窟とかネパールの山奥に住んでいても良さそうなものです。
＊アシュタンガ・ヴィンヤサヨガの経典であるヨガスートラはサンキヤ哲学に基づいているので、ヴェーダ哲学とは考えを異にします。
翻って現在のアシュタンガヨガの先生たちを見ると、夫婦やカップルで活躍しているアシュタンガの先生が結構いますよね。Lucy&John Scott夫妻とかShelley Washington & David Swenson夫妻とか。グルジが厳密にヴェーダを実践している人だったら起こらない話です。
家族とともに一生過ごすというのが現代の世の中にはフィットしている、というがグルジが我々ぶ伝えたことの一つだったのかもしれません。それが良いか悪いかは別の問題ですけど。
ちなみにグルジとおなじクリシュナマチャリア氏を師にもつBKSアイアンガー氏も家族を大切にしていることで有名ですよね。
